Open Fire Grills

Open fire grills cook directly over a live wood or charcoal fire, with nothing between the coals and the food but a grate or a steel plate. No burners, no knobs. You control the heat with grate height, coal placement and distance from the fire, the way open-fire cooking has always worked.

This collection brings every live-fire grill we sell into one place: Santa Maria and Argentine grills from Sunterra, Tagwood BBQ and Turbo, and fire-ring plancha grills from Arteflame and OFYR. Freestanding on a cart, built into an outdoor kitchen, or a complete OFYR Island. New to cooking over fire? Read our open fire grill guide first.

Choose by setup

On a cart or freestanding

The easiest way into live-fire cooking at home. Roll it onto the patio, light it and cook. Some, like the Sunterra stainless Santa Maria, can later lift off the cart and drop into a masonry island.

Built into an outdoor kitchen

Built-in Santa Maria and Argentine grills from Sunterra and Tagwood BBQ frame into stone, brick or stucco like a gas grill. Check each product page for the cutout or installation drawing your mason needs.

Small patio or camping

The Arteflame One Series 20″ weighs 65 lbs and is listed by Arteflame for small patios and camping. The 30″ gives a family-size cooktop at 155 lbs.

What to check before you buy

  • Grate adjustment — a crank wheel gives you a full range of heights; preset hooks are simpler and cheaper.
  • Firebox and brasero — firebrick lining holds heat and protects the steel; a brasero lets you make coals while you cook.
  • Steel — 304 stainless for coastal and low-maintenance setups; black steel, carbon steel or corten for the look and the price.
  • Size and crowd — use the Feeds and Grill Size filters to match the grill to how many people you cook for.
  • Accessories — covers, rotisseries, griddles and secondary grates are sold for most models; check the product page.

Pricing, shipping and help choosing

Everything in this collection ships free. No sales tax outside NY, NJ, FL, OH and NC. Current promotions appear on the product pages. Some Sunterra grills are made to order, so check the lead time on each one.

We design custom outdoor kitchens around these grills every week, from sizing a cutout to planning counter space around a crank tower or a plancha. Call 888-678-3530 and the owner answers, or start a free outdoor kitchen design.

Open fire grills: common questions

Which open fire grill fits a small patio?

The Arteflame One Series 20″ and 30″ are the most compact grills in this collection, and both double as a fire pit. For a crank-grate grill, the Sunterra Santa Maria 30″ is the smallest we carry.

Do these grills burn wood, charcoal or both?

Every grill in this collection is listed for both wood and charcoal. Most owners start with lump charcoal for steady heat and add hardwood splits for flavor.

Can I build an open fire grill into my outdoor kitchen?

Yes. Filter by Configuration > Built-In to see the built-in Sunterra and Tagwood BBQ models. Plan a non-combustible island and follow the installation guide on the product page. Our built-in Santa Maria grills guide covers cutouts and framing.

What is the difference between a Santa Maria and an Argentine grill?

Both raise and lower a grate over live coals. Argentine grills add a brasero for making embers and often use V-channel grates that drain fat away from the fire. Read Santa Maria vs Argentine grill for the full comparison.

How long does shipping take?

Grills ship free in the lower 48. Some Sunterra grills are made to order, with lead times listed on the product page. Call us for a current estimate before you plan an install.
